Day 34 - Friday 3rd June 2005

First stop today was Murano Island to visit the famous Venetian glass makers.  The hotel organised a water taxi to take us there and the trip out took us through a couple of canals before hitting the open water. On the way out, we passed a very large gondola propelled by 17 oarsmen, quite spectacular.   When we arrived at the island we were shown round the Signoretti glass works, and the glass makers demonstrated their craft.  It takes about 15 years to train a master.  We were then conducted around the showroom, the glass was beautiful.  We bought a bowl and had it shipped back home.  Water taxi back to San Marco then we caught a water bus down to the east end of the island and found a little trattoria for lunch.  Very local.  Caught the water bus back to the east and went looking for a market.  Saw some interesting sites, including a drained canal, a canal dredge and a marine hearse.  Got hopelessly lost and ended up back were we had parked our car, retraced our steps and eventually found our way.  Took a roundabout route home via the Rialto Bridge and a number of narrow back streets. After looking in a shop window in a narrow street, Judy turned and almost stepped into a canal, she caught herself just in time.  Cleaned up for dinner at a busy place in a lane beside San Marco.  Weather again perfect.
