Day 29 - Sunday 29th May 2005

Up early today.  We closed up the old mill and set off just after ten.  We travelled down the A6 toll way at a handy 130kph.  The temperature hovered around the mid 30s but the air conditioning kept us cool.  As we approached Geneva the trip become more and more interesting, with 4km tunnels carved through soaring mountains joined by long curved bridges.  We arrived at Geneva and was stopped by the border guards who stiffed us for 40 Swiss Francs for a stamp to stick on our windscreen.  They weren't interested in seeing our passports.  We drove through the city with possibly the most confusing set of traffic direction rules I have ever seen.  We eventually arrived at the shore of Lake Lausanne and finding a rare parking spot took a few pictures of the lake activities including a yacht race between what appeared to be some large keel boats.  Very picturesque.  We decided to head on round the lake rather than brave the Geneva streets again.  Sadly there was not much in the way of authentic eating places on our journey so we were reduced to a lunch of  Maccas to sustain us.  Setting off again we drove back into France, with absolutely no indication when we had left Switzerland, ad headed for Chamonix in the French Alps.  The scenery was spectacular, snow capped mountains appear to overhang the road.  We drove into Chamonix and found accommodation at a the small, but charming, Hotel La Savoyard.  Our room has a balcony and looks out at Mont Blanc.  We settled in then went for a walk through the town, the contrasts are amazing, the temperature was in the 30s but people were returning from the cable car with their skis.  We are going up the mountain tomorrow.  We had dinner at an outdoor cafe and met a group of Canadians also travelling by car through Europe.  I'm sitting up in bed at the moment watching the first TV we have seen in two weeks.  The only show on is covering the EU constitution referendum in France, its all in French, so mostly incomprehensible, but I think the nons have it.
