Day 14 - Saturday 14th May 2005

We had a marvellous nights sleep and didn't finally wake up until almost ten in the morning.  It was very quiet and there was nothing to wake us.  Still we are in no hurry.   Weather looked a little grey.  After breakfast we jumped in the car and headed off for Beaune where the Saturday market was in progress.  The countryside is beautiful, green fields, picturesque villages and dense forests.  Lots of charolais cattle in the fields and lots of vineyards.  Cameron drove, quite competently, and after parking outside the old town walls of Beaune, we walked to the central market square.  It was very busy and filled with wonderful colour and produce.  The stall holders were very friendly and offered us samples of their produce.  We bought some salami and some other cured meat, some delicious cheese and a variety of vegetables including some nice big artichokes then headed back to the car.  We took the "scenic route" back to Clomot, (all routes are scenic down here but "scenic route" is what you call it if you get a little bit lost).  We settled back in at home and had a marvellous lunch from the market produce.  After lunch the sun emerged so we sat outside enjoying the warmth.  A little later we explored the pigeonairre beside the house.  Pigeons were apparently used, before the advent of modern technology, as the means of communication, and our pigeonairre was one of a network scattered all across France, not quite broadband, but effective.  We disturbed a large hawk when we opened the door.  It was nesting on the floor inside, and there were four eggs in the nest.  In the evening we cleaned up and headed into the village of Arnay-le-Duc for dinner at Chez Camille.  The restaurant has been there for two hundred years, has three stars, and was delightful.   We sat in comfortable armchairs in the foyer enjoying an aperitif while we ordered our food and wine from immense menus. Then we were conducted into the dining room for dinner.  After our entrees of variously, oysters in several styles, foie gras and snails, Judy had a Charolais steak, Cameron, thought he had ordered roast lamb, but through a slight mistranslation of culinary terms, had what he then thought were lambs brains but which eventually turned out to be calf sweetbreads.  Delicious, but challenging for our boy.  Ninya had frogs legs and I had the pigeon.  With some wonderful local wine to compliment the food we had a memorable meal.  The staff were very friendly and helpful and I recommend the restaurant to anyone in travelling in the region.  We finished off with coffee and cognac in deep armchairs before heading back home.
