East MacDonnell's

Friday - 25th June

Clear weather again, drove off down the East MacDonnell's to Trephina Gorge with a few fellow travellers.  Had a giant date scone that we'd bought from the Date Farm round the corner from the CP before setting off for a leisurely stroll around the rim of the gorge and back via the dry river bed.  Great views to the east.  Had lunch then set off to a nearby "Rock Hole", about 4k of very 4WD tracks to get there.  We walked around to the rock pool, there appeared to be a rock carving further up the canyon, but we couldn't get close to it. The water was very cold. We then trooped up to the lookout to work off the lunch.

Went to the Alice Springs Golf Club for dinner with a mob of mates we've met along the way.  Great night.

Monday - 28th June

Minus 2C overnight but warmed up to a beautiful day.  Went down to the railroad track to watch the longest Ghan to date go through the Heavitree Gap.  47 carriages, a really big one, took ages to go past.  Had a quick lunch then went out to the Artilunga Historical Reserve for the afternoon.  Lots of ruins associated with the mines.  We went into the Great Western Mine hoping to strike it rich, but no luck.  The local pub had unfortunately closed, cause it looked like a great spot for a drink.
