Friday - 13th JulySet off to Lightning Ridge via Walgett. Along the way Judy tried some cotton picking from plants growing by the roadside, but didn't collect enough for a sheet. We stayed at Lorne Station about three kilometres out of town along a not too rough gravel road. The amenities were clean, the sites spacious and the welcome outstanding. After we had settled in, Tina, the property owner, conducted us on a walk around the station, up through the pit mines to the lookout over the open-cut and back down to the art gallery. That night a huge fire was lit in the fire-pit and everyone gathered round for the sing along. Peter and Norm entertained us all very professionally. Saturday - 14th JulyWe bought a multi-attraction ticket and visited five of the Ridge's major drawcards including The Walk In Mine, Bevan's Cactus Nursery, Kangaroo Hill, The Bottle House and The Black Queen. All are well worth a visit especially The Black Queen at 3PM when the collection of antique oil lamps are lit. We also followed several of the "car door" trails; these are trails to points of interest where you are guided by different coloured car doors placed along the tracks. Back at the station we gathered round the fire pit for happy hour before turning in for the night.
