Wednesday - 5th SeptemberIn wet and miserable conditions we took the ferry across to Fraser Island. The sandy tracks around the island really are suitable only for high-clearance 4WDs. We trundled through the magnificent forest to the sparkling clear waters of Lake MacKenzie then continued on to Eurong on the east side of the island. (Fuel prices there were astronomical but the pies were good.) We had planned to go for a drive along the beach but the high winds were pushing the waves right up to the dunes so that was cancelled. On the way back, we encountered a couple of young tourists in trouble in their hired 4WD. It had stopped and was blocking the narrow track with no way round. I had to tow him backwards down the track to Eurong before we could continue. Early back for the ferry so we had a drink in the bar near the pier. It would be a terrific spot in good weather. Sat in the car on the way back in the ferry.
