Day 30 - Monday 30th May 2005The day dawned miserable and cool, a far cry from yesterday. The visibility at the top of the mountain was low to zero according to the cable car office so we decided to make alternate arrangements. First stop was the local train station to take the little train around and up the mountain to Montenvers overlooking a large glacier. It was a great trip with the train ascending the very steep grade using a toothed track and a cog wheel. After lunch we headed of through the mountains to Switzerland. The drive was beautiful through deep valleys and up the sides of high mountains, we arrived at the Swiss town of Martigny, quite large in a long valley at the base of the mountains. The are vineyards growing down the hill sides that are so steep that the pickers would have to rope themselves to the top to save themselves falling off the mountain. Headed back to Chamonix, weather was still wet and miserable. Had dinner at a great little Italian restaurant, Casa Valerio.
