Day 22 - Sunday 22nd May 2005Cameron was reading the wine atlas last night and thought he might like to visit the Romanee-Conti vineyards that Judy and I had seen a few days ago. As he was heading back to England today, we decided to head to the train station at Dijon via the vineyard. We got up early, 8am, as Cam's train leaves about 2pm, the weather was fairly ordinary, drizzle and low grey clouds. We headed off down through Beaune and looped back up past the vineyards of the Cote-de-Beaune then into the Cote-de-Nuits and the vineyards of Vosne-Romanee. Winding our way up a narrow road through the vineyards we arrived at Romanee-Conti. As the "World Atlas of Wine" says "..there is nothing to suggest that the world's most expensive wine lies beneath your feet..", the vineyard is surrounded by a low stone wall with an unobtrusive stone plaque with the vineyard's name. We took a few photo's and then headed off up to Dijon. As it was Sunday almost nothing was open, so we finished the "Owl Trail" that we had started earlier in the week, including making a wish by rubbing the "lucky owl" carved on the stone walls of the 13th century Notre Dame church. We then went off for some lunch at a little cafe in the "Place-Du-Theatre", a very tasty steak and a carafe of some local wine. On the walk back to the car we noticed that a large sand-pit with small grandstands had been set up in "Place de la Liberation", for a beach-volleyball competition. The sand looked pretty waterlogged and the weather didn’t look like improving. We saw Cameron off on the TGV (fast train) to Paris and then headed back to Clomot. Being a little chill we stoked up the fire and settled down with a warming scotch. Dinner was a simple affair of local wine and produce.
